Order of events on Thursday, 18 Tir 1405 (9 July 2026 / 24 Muharram) — the state funeral and burial in Mashhad

  1. 0106:00 AM

    Funeral Procession Begins

The procession assembles at 06:00 AM on Imam Reza Street (south of the shrine) and proceeds toward the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza. Per the Governor of Khorasan Razavi, the procession is expected to take roughly six hours on the road; bodies will reach the shrine between approximately 12:00 PM and Maghrib / Isha.

  2. 0212:00 PM onwards

    Body Arrival Window

If the procession starts at 06:00 AM, the bodies will reach the Holy Shrine around noon. Arrival may extend to 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 PM depending on road and crowd conditions. The southern route (Imam Reza Street → Felke Bargh → Felke Abe) carries the bodies; those wishing to follow on foot — especially with elderly companions or children — are advised to keep a safe distance (e.g. Maidan Shohada or Maidan Towhid) rather than crowd the short south route.

  3. 03Maghrib / Isha

    Funeral Prayer at Sahne Enghelab

Burial prayer (Salat al-Mayyit) will be held at Sahne Enghelab. Those standing in Sahne Ghadir, Kowsar, or Payambar Azam — the open courtyards — will NOT be joined to the prayer; the prayer connection extends only as far as the Bast Navvab Safavi and Bast Sheikh Toosi approaches, outside the shrine. Sahne Azadi, Sahne Enghelab, and Masjid Gowharshad are closed for entry — please do not insist on entering.

  4. 04Following the prayer

    Burial at the Holy Shrine

Burial of Ayatollah Khamenei at the Holy Shrine of Imam Reza (his birthplace). The burial operation takes at least 6 to 7 hours. Per shrine regulations, the precinct will not return to normal operations for at least 12 hours after burial. Live broadcasts on wide-screen TVs in Sahne Payambar Azam and surrounding courtyards are available for viewing from a distance.

  5. 05Thursday afternoon

    Recommended Ziyarat Visit

Pilgrims are advised to disperse after the prayer, return home, and rest. Thursday afternoon — when the shrine is less crowded and the iwans have been reopened — is the recommended time for ziyarat (pilgrimage visit).
